On The Edge is an exhibit that focuses on artistic paths about to be taken. Five exciting young artists confront what it means to be an artist at the earliest stages of their career – learning to define themselves and their artistic identity through their work. Viewers are invited to witness part of that process and experience the artists’ journey through their paintings, photography, prints, and drawings as the artists ask themselves - where do we go from here? Raw | Refined is an exhibit that’s about the delicate interplay between spontaneity and structure - about the artistic process and the distance between starting a piece of artwork and finishing it and all of the art media, conceptualizing, production, creativity, formal choices, and intuition that happen in between. Whether a painter plans out every brushstroke beforehand or applies them off the cuff or a photographer carefully composes each shot or snaps off frames from the hip, every piece of artwork is created from both the head and the gut. Featuring eleven (11) regional artists, Raw | Refined pairs up paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and sculptural ceramics from artists working from both perspectives. Raw | Refined features artwork by award-winning regional artists Tim Dooley and Aaron Wilson (Cedar Falls, IA), Nora Drew (Chicago, IL), Claire Hedden (Normal, IL), Carrie Lingscheit (Chicago, IL), Damon McArthur (Kewanee, IL), Jennifer Murray (Chicago, IL), Jeremy Plunkett (Milwaukee, WI), Alan Pocaro (Charleston, IL), Chelsey Wood (Chicago, IL), Jacob Van Loon (Chicago, IL). The exhibit was curated by Joshua Cox and Christina LaMaster. The exhibit will take place in Gallery 1 at the Peoria Art Guild.

Erin Zerbe | Jason Judd

November 15 - December 17, 2014

Opening Reception
Saturday, November 15 | 6 to 8 pm

This body of work explores the “debris” associated with the performance of the beauty ritual. This work seeks to examine and critique the dichotomy of natural and altered bodies with the balance of desire and repulsion. This exhibition serves as an opportunity to have a larger conversation about the role of internalized and externalized misogyny, and how these forces are visited up women in ways that often go unnoticed but question a women's own culpability in the cultural perception of her body as both abject and object.

"Find & Found"

Erin Hayden | Jeff Robinson

August 30 - September 17, 2014

Opening Reception
Saturday, August 30 | 6 to 8 pm

Artists Erin Hayden (MFA candidate, Northwestern University) and Jeff Robinson (Gallery Director, University of Illinois Springfield) offer a free display of mixed media paintings from August 30 to September 17, 2014 at the Peoria Art Guild. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, May 10 from 6-8pm. Erin Hayden’s paintings walk the line between representation and object. By using paint, papers, and fabrics, Hayden conforms to traditional painting and design conventions, while also questioning the legitimacy of pictorial representation and “the phenomenon of simply looking.” Jeff Robinson’s paintings are almost more like constructions than paintings, mashing together materials and found objects to create new and meaningful connections between previously unconnected items. Working within 2 and 3 dimensions, Robinson’s paintings serve as visual allegories for life’s experiences - seeking meaning where none seemed to exist before. Beverages and light snacks to be served on August 30 from 6 to 8 pm at the Peoria Art Guild located on 203 Harrison Street. Parking is available and convenient.

March 22 - April 23, 2014

Opening Reception (FREE to public):
Saturday,March 22, 2014
6:00 to 8:00 pm

Light Snack and Beverages Served

Mel Cook “Between The Void” Cook paints still lifes and portraits, two genres that are usually looked down upon as less-than-serious genres. They’re both genres that focus on ‘objects’ – flowers, dishes, fabrics, interiors, faces, poses, etc., rather than stories or emotions. Cook’s paintings showcase these traditional items, but she paints them in a way that intentionally complicates our ability to look at them as such. Non-painting materials, such as rope, stickers, and wrapping paper serve to break the illusion of ‘painted objects’ while heavy textures and thick brushstrokes make the viewer keenly aware of the inherent falseness of illusionistic representation. Cook says that her paintings are ‘sarcastic, yet sincere’. She gives us painted objects to look at, but then makes us self-aware of our desire to look at them. The paintings themselves seem to resist our gaze, creating a dialogue between viewer/viewed that’s not necessarily friendly. Angela Inez Baldus “Memorial” Inez Baldus tells stories in her paintings, but they’re not her stories, nor are they supposed to be ours. She says that her paintings serve as memorials - memorials for events that happened to other people. She’s not simply acting as a ‘hired gun’; crafting memorials that don’t hold meaning to her. The act of painting these memorials, according to Inez Baldus, are a way for her to process her own emotional state and explore temporal states of being – time, death, repetition, rebirth, etc. The memorials are designed to evoke nostalgia via the imagery that Baldus has painted, but also via the past experiences and expectations that the viewer has brought with them.

John Miller & Friends

January 18 - February 19, 2014
6 pm to 8 pm

Opening Reception (FREE to public):
Saturday, January 18, 2014
6:00 to 8:00 pm

“ ‘Gathering,’ a collaborative exhibition was held at Habatat Gallery in Royal Oak, Michigan featuring some of the most influential artists using glass. Glass sculptor, John Miller, selected 30 artists pairing up with each of them for a collaboration and intersection, creating a single composite work of art. The idiosyncratic embellishment by a colleague both interprets Miller’s art and takes it to some new hybridized realm. These artists were chosen for their significant efforts in the advancement of the contemporary glass movement. The elegant form of the traditional Venetian Goblet was the initial inspiration for Miller’s ‘High Volume’ series. Miller adapted these ideas and techniques to create a body of work where the goblet forms were dramatically increased, reaching heights of 3 to 5 feet. These sort of collaborations provide artists opportunities to explore new ideas and pursue ambitious projects.” ~James Yood, Chicago Art Institute

Also, both artists are currently examining pattern and how it can function toward their goals. Both artists work make reference to the body and cycles in nature. The work presented in "Frags and Co-ordinates" covers a large span of time from the present back to the mid seventies. There are two abstract concepts being explored here. The Frag pieces are mixed media, i.e., cloth, paint, paper, wood, etc.. They interact directly with the wall space, engaging it optically. The Co-ordinates are selected raw plywood panels visually activated with charcoal lines and sometimes paint. Some of the pieces have been shown in New York at the OK Harris Gallery, in Chicago at the Chicago Art Institute and Nancy Lurie Gallery. The work has been reviewed in Arts magazine.

December 1, 2012 - 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

"ARRAY 1000 SUITE"

Rupert Deese

October 11 - November 23, 2012

Opening Reception:
October 13, 2012 - 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

New York artist Rupert Deese exhibits five large, woodcut prints from his suite Array 1000 which was produced by Manneken Press. In each of the Array prints, Deese divides the space of the circle into unique tiling patterns, using nine equal radial divisions. He then sub-divides these pie shapes into equal areas using additional radial lines and inscribed circles. While essentially abstract, the Array images have a tangential relationship to the landscape and watersheds of the upper Merced and Tuolumne Rivers in California, an area beloved by the artist which has inspired much of his artistic output. An earlier eponymous sequence of monochrome painted objects that accurately model the topographical shapes of this landscape was the genesis of the tiling patterns, and the Array opus can be seen as a continued meditation on the configuration of this geography. Deese’s work is included in many public and private collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

"Via Alternate Descriptions"

Heather Brammeier

August 13 - September 14, 2012

Opening Reception:
August 18 - 6:00 pm -8:00 pm

Artist Statement: Via Alternate Descriptions is my first solo exhibition that includes both oil paintings and fabric constructions. The equivocation between flatness and depth is a driving force in the development of my images. It allows for a wide range of subject matter; I allow recurring themes to emerge and hibernate organically. Among these themes are water (along with aquatic life and pearls), vermicular tunnels (and the biomorphic creatures that create them), and architectural spaces that have elements and/or creatures that defy gravity. All share a curvilinear sensibility and heightened color palette. Heather Brammeier is an Associate Professor of Art at Bradley University.

"Bent"

Daniel Mrva

August 13 - September 14, 2012

Opening Reception:
August 18 - 6:00 pm -8:00 pm

Artist Statement: My work asserts the power of the author by encouraging submissive attitudes from the viewer through the lure of beauty, material curiosity, and illusionistic puzzle. When encountering my work, a viewer who moves to a particular vantage point (often by kneeling or leaning against the wall) is rewarded with an interesting color interaction, beautiful pattern, etc. Other times, visual and material puzzles encourage the viewer to examine more closely the canvas which juts into the viewer’s personal space. By luring the viewer in such ways, and then highlighting the compulsive power of visual pleasure to literally move their body, I remind the viewer of the nature of beauty as a consensual submission to the power of some Other, in this case, myself as author of their visual experience.

"Scavenged Landscapes"

David Linneweh, Artist

June 12 - July 31, 2012

Opening Reception:
June 16 - 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Artist Statement: The ways in which architecture varies has ultimately found a place of direct influence within my work, their alterations spawning my own re-configurations. In my most recent work I play with the idea of how I can re-assemble the architecture I experience by creating my own configurations, my own architectural hybrids. These new configurations transcribe representational elements of actual space while also incorporating abstraction of the formal elements of flat paint and drawing over a wood veneer surface.

April 7 - 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm*

*Members are invited to a special preview at 5:30 pm

Des Moines, Iowa artist Benjamin Gardner’s paintings and sculptures weave technical naiveté and formal sophistication into a complex hybrid of folk art and geometric abstraction. Gardner’s work is informed by superstitions, divination, and folklore. Visually the language and forms of lore arise from mystic texts, constellations, and circular imagery such as mandalas and hex signs. Gardner will exhibit paintings, sculptures and an installation work made solely for the PAG. Gardner will also be recorded in an interview for the Resource Room.

"Ephemera"

Opening Reception:
April 7 – 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm*

*Members are invited to a special preview at 5:30 pm

"Sensory Landscapes"

Sarah Nesbit, Painter
Lyn Wellhausen, Video Artist

March 7 - March 31, 2012
Monday - Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Opening Reception:
March 10 - 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Sensory Landscapes" combines the work of painter Sarah Nesbit, a Peoria native currently living in Chicago, and New York video artist Lyn Wellhausen. Nesbit's fluid and atmospheric abstractions seem to merge landscape, psyche and body while similarly Wellhausen's video works explore bodily presence through a murky and fluid lens which invites perceptual contemplation and nostalgic reckoning. Exhibited together, their works, both psychologically charged and at times nearly hallucinatory, elucidate landscapes of both body and senses.

"Chest is Wind, Head is Lion"

Brandon Siscoe, Sculpture

March 7 - March 31, 2012
Monday – Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Opening Reception:
March 10 – 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Bloomington/Normal artist Brandon Siscoe's "Chest is Wind, Chest is Lion" assembles recent sculptures which reveal connections between his chosen materials and the weight of mortal being. Through the physicality of his media - lead, tree trunks, stones, wooden stacks - Siscoe's visual analogies emotionally explore relationships between flesh and ephemera.

"Looping"

Michael Wille, Abstract Artist

February 6 - March 1, 2012
Monday – Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Opening Reception:
February 11 – 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Michael Wille (Bloomington, IL) exhibited 17 geometric abstractions both large and medium scale. Looping takes its title from the method in which Wille’s works reflexively inform each other during their making. Using various kinds of masking techniques, portions of a painting’s masked imagery are used on other paintings making their language uniform despite the other various kinds of paint application he uses such as trowelling, spraying, and blotting. Wille’s works contribute to the long lineage of abstract painting and reinvestigate the act of painting within today’s diverse use of media. Wille was featured in the Peoria Journal Star.

"This Land is Your Land"

Tim Roby, Sculptor

February 6 - March 1, 2012
Monday – Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Opening Reception:
February 11 – 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm

As a compatriot exhibition to Wille’s Looping, sculptor Tim Roby’s (Chicago) formalist sculptural constructions suggest partially assembled or disassembled structures which possess both funkiness and ennui. Assemblages of paint, plywood, insulation foam, plaster and a host of ubiquitous materials culled from common home improvement stores imply a playfulness and caricatured aspects of decay and destruction. This Land is Your Land was featured in the Peoria Journal Star.

"A Case of the Living"
