Carving Woodspirit Walking Sticks

Instructor: Jim Arnold

Department: Other

Woodspirit carving is steeped in folklore and is a favorite of many woodcarvers, old and new. In this class, students learn the processes for creating these sticks, and will create their own walking stick in class for the take-home class project.

While seemingly just a ‘fun’ class to take, there are important skills taught including use of mallets and heavy duty bench chisels. Perhaps most importantly, this class also serves as an introduction to carving facial anatomy…eyes, noses, mouths, eyebrows, beards, facial expressions are all included. For the purposes of the walking stick class, all these areas are covered. In future classes, however, we will treat each area on its own. For example, a class just for carving eyes where you learn to carve ‘sad’ eyes, tired eyes, sleeping eyes, etc. everything in much greater detail to make your carving work demand attention.
